I just wanted to let all of you know that I will be doing the weekly WTA Blog for USA Today throughout the entire US Open series! I will do all my updating and new posts on that so be sure to check it out each week to see how life on the US Open series is going for us. Thanks for the continued support and I look forward to reading all your comments.
Hello, Hello!
First thing I HAVE to say about Rome is “if you can drive here, you can drive ANYWHERE….really.” Now we’re not talking a few miles over the speed limit or rushed motorists cutting others off.. no no… its an all out circus of cars, scooters and pedestrians taking their lives in their hands, and trying to get from point A to point B. As far as I can tell the actual lines on the road don’t have much meaning. I can never really figure out if we’re on a two lane, one way street until I see a scooter flying down the road towards me… in the same lane. Who needs Caffeine when you can play a little Chicken on the way to work. Now I’m sure there are “special” laws for our scooter riding friends. They duck and weave around the cars (that could be parked OR driving) like its a competitive obstacle course, all while smoking a ciggerette, sending a text, and looking damn good while doing it in 6 inch heels!
At a light, as our lane was turning, the car ahead of me hit the front wheel of a stopped scooter going the other way< practically knocking the 2 riders off. Now granted, it was quite a small car, (like the Barbie and Ken power wheels you would get for the kids) so no significant damage…but still, its like real life Bumper Cars! And just you take a peek at these bumpers, it’s an insurance nightmare. And I’m not just talking about the beat up junkers..no siree, they got Mercedes’ and Ferraris’ looking like they competed in a demolition derby on the weekend! Now going back to the sizes, I saw a “car” that could only fit one passenger!! His backpack and esspresso mug were actually taped to the roof of his car.. ok ok not really, but had the driver been wearing a winter jacket no way he would’ve fit… I think my husband’s truck would actually be able to run OVER it with out running it over… Now unless it gets some serious gas milage there’s gotta be another explanation on WHY someone would drive a mini golf cart around the city… the answer to that… PARKING. yikes. ANYWHERE you can “fit” a car (or scooter), is game… Sidewalks, Medians, on-ramps, off- ramps, merge lanes, street corners (yes, the actual rounded part of the corner), and let me add, that even on the street, the parking can be done Parallel OR perpendicular.
Out of all the chaos, two things really stick out to me. 1. I haven’t seen any legit accidents on the side of the road and 2. is the non exisistance of road rage! There might be a hand wave here or a honk or 2 there but for the most part, everyone just excepts it and goes on with their day. I’ll have to hand it to the Italians driving in Rome… They’ve entertained yet mostly impressed me.
The Drivers for the tournament definetly know their city inside and out. I have yet to take the same route twice. And if they dropped me off at any point along the way, I would never find my way back. They’ll make a turn in what looks like a dead end alley and WHAM… your in the parking lot behind the tennis stadium.. Front passenger seat, Air conditioning blowing full blast in my face, eyes on the road, motion sickness ginger gum in my mouth.. yup, I’m prepared for the ride to the courts…
So lets see where I was the last time I updated my BLOG??? I think it was Memphis,TN and now I am at Indian Wells, CA. It is nuts how fast the weeks go by each year that you are on tour. For some reason I feel like I have been on the road for such a long time already this year but when I look at it, there have only been a few stops.
Anyway, Indian Wells has been great thus far. I dropped a match to Peer, but it was a positive as we played a lot of deuce points that could have gone either way and changed the outcome of the match. On the doubles side, Yan Zi and I are still kicking butt and looking to continue and hopefully make a run to the finals! Indian Wells is so much fun each year. My husband and I rented a house this time and we were able to bring “Ruger” along again this year which is always a blast. Having the house also means my Justin can cook for me each day!!!! I hate the long European season when I don’t get to see my puppy or my house, or have any home cooked meals but that’s just part of the job. Also had a chance to catch the Bryan Bros. band at LaQuinta and at the IWells Tennis Garden. They are kicking ass both on and off the court right now, and the band rocks!
I feel like there is so much that I could dive into right now, but I have to get my things ready and head for practice in a few. I will say I am looking forward to Miami so I can see my family at least one more time before I head overseas again. It is always nice to catch up with them every few months. C-Ya!
Hi All! I was in such a rush when we got here that I forgot to update the BLOG. Be patient as I had a little hiccup with the website and am having some changes made. It should all be done within a few days. Most of the changes are in the pic gallery and some of the content. It’s so hard to have everything you want on a site. My goal is to provide just enough to keep it interesting. Let me know if there is anything else the fans want.
On another note, my match last night was rough. Maria did a good job of not letting me get into my rhythm as she played all her shots more aggressive than she has in the past. The last time we played it went three sets. I am still trying to figure out what exactly went wrong. Either way it is what it is and I just gotta figure my way out of that one. If she continues to play like that I think she will be back to the top later this year.
I am still in dubs which is always fun, and I think we have a shot to take this title. I want to thank my dad, aunt and uncle for coming down and watching my matches. It is always nice to have some family around when I am in the states. I also need to give a shout out to my Fed Cup fans and let them know that the next match will be the end of April in Birmingham,AL. That is all for now as I have to hurry up and get to practice. Thanks!!!!!!!
Hey everyone!
Thanks for all the support during Fed Cup! I had a great time being part of the US team. For me it’s such a different experience playing for a team and your country versus always for yourself. Every match was packed at the stadium in Leivin, though we weren’t the ones being cheered for. Every once in a while I would just tell myself they were cheering for the USA and that helped me get through some tight games in my match. I was ready to play the 2nd singles on Sunday but with Mel pulling out the win, Mary Jo gave Christina a chance to get some Fed Cup experience. I wish I could have done that when I was a junior! Doubles has always been fun for me as I love being aggressive at the net. Liezel is very good at court coverage and strategy, I learn new things each time we play…
The Hotel we stayed in was very historic. There was even a signed letter from President D. Eisenhower thanking them for aiding the Americans. It was a very old building and the first thing Justin said when we got there is “this place has for sure got some ghosts flying around”.. thanks babe… on top of that there was a cemetery right outside my window, yikes! However it is most defenitely the biggest room I’ve ever had while staying in France. Great water pressure in the showers and believe it or not, a king size bed… BIG pluses in my book!
I think I can say, on behalf of the team, that we ate enough bread that week to last us a few months. All the fresh French bread and real butter we could want, everyday, with a choice of homemade jams… Pretty much the opposite of my normal diet. Good thing I only stayed there for a week!
Now, I’ll have to tell everyone about our Fed Cup tradition. At least one of the nights, after dinner, everyone plays movie Charades. For those of you who don’t know what it is, there are 2 teams and each team picks about 10 movie titles and writes them down. A person from the other team then has to pick one of the titles that you came up with and get there own team to guess the movie. Only thing is no speaking out loud and no props. Now, picture everybody playing is a super competitive person, trying to win. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Liezel, (who wasn’t on my team) is by far is the most entertaining Charades player and happen to pick the movie title Bangkok Dangerous (a movie title I picked out knowing the potential)… Let me tell you, she tried Everything to get her team to guess, and to no avail. Meanwhile my team is on the floor laughing because she is progressively turning more red and getting more mad at her team for not coming close to guessing. Hilarious! Since the first Fed Cup last year we’ve made a couple rules, the biggest being no foreign films in other languages. Its a little tough trying to act out Cuando Vuelvas a mi Lado….
Im back in Phoenix now and have 2 days until I have to leave for Memphis. Playing doubles with Meahgan Shawnissy there. Like me, she hates when people spell her name wrong!! (haha its really spelled Meghann Shaughnessy) She also lives in Scottsdale, actually pretty close to where I’m at. Though all these months we still haven’t gone out for dinner! we agreed to finally, for sure, do it in Memphis. Like me, she was fighting some injuries in previous years but feeling good so far this year. This will be our first tournament playing together and I still have to ask her what side she likes to play! She was ranked as high as #3 in the world in doubles so I’m really pumped to play and see how we do.
Well, I think thats about it for now. I have to go unpack, do laundry, then repack… plus spend a little quality time with the doggy…. Oh, and take down our Christmas tree… oops
Hey everyone!!! I just woke up and am headed down to breakfast with the team, but I wanted to take a second and drop you all a line. Despite the continuous rain and chilly weather everything is easy going thus far. The site where we are playing the matches is actually really nice and has a bunch of seating for the French fans. The entire US team practiced yesterday and we all had a good hit even though we had all gotten in Tuesday night from another long ass flight. Today’s Schedule will be mostly the same as yesterday except for the dinner reception that we have tonight. Take care for now and I will keep you all updated throughout the week. Thanks!!!
HIIIIII!!!!!!!!!
I just wanted to take a minute and freshen things up on the BLOG page. I forgot to do it before I left for Australia and then kept putting it off each day I was there. Anyway, The Aussie Open was great this year since the weather was perfect everyday except for one. My husband very much enjoyed Melbourne and the Open. I think he even said it is probably his favorite Slam. The food was great, people were cool and the accommodations were comforting. I got to see some old friends and met plenty of new ones while we were there.
As for the tennis, that went fairly well too. Despite having lost my final qualifying match, I was relatively happy with the way I played considering I had not played an actual match since September. As for doubles, my new partner Yan Zi and I did well for our first tournament together. We were knocked out in the Quarters by Serena and Venus. We managed to take them into the 3rd set, but gave it up 6-4 in the end. Yan and I had opportunities in the first to take that set as well, but sometimes the balls don’t always land where you need them too! Anyway it was a great time playing with her and we are looking forward to winning some titles as a team this season. Mixed doubles was a great time too as Bob Bryan and I played together for the first time. Even though we lost, it was so much fun out there. Bob and Mike are so much fun to be around. They make the match fun no matter what happens. They deserve a round of applause from everyone considering they just defended their Aussie Open title and won their 8th slam I believe. Those guys are two of my favorites on the tour!
I was overjoyed to learn that I had been selected for Fed Cup again this year. Despite having missed the Fed Cup final in Italy due to injury, I rooted them on from home. I can’t wait to get back out there with Liezel, Mel and Shenay come February 6th and 7th. Many thanks go out to MJ for putting another great team together. I am confident we can get the USA back to the finals for another shot at the title. Be sure to watch our matches on Tennis Channel Saturday and Sunday of this week.
As for my personal life, things are great! My husband got to do his hunting in the off season, I got to lay out by our pool and our dog “Ruger” got to have us both home for more than a few days. I look forward to reading all the comments and answering all the questions that my fans have for me this year. So don’t be afraid to ask me something or leave a comment.
Thanks again for all the continued support!!!
All in all I have to say off season ‘09 is going great! I ended my tennis year on a good note at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City, Canada. I got to play doubles with local favorite and good friend of mine, Alex Wozniak, and had a blast. I don’t think I’ve laughed so much during a match as we did in the semi’s against Vania and Barbora. As well as Alex and I played, we went down in a tight 3rd set tiebreaker. (To all you Wozniak fans, I found out her pet nickname! If I let it slip now she might launch a ball at me next time we play, but don’t fret, maybe I’ll let it slip in a future blog)
After Canada I got to take some “real” time off . What I mean by that is not only did I take off tennis, I had a break from the gym, from protein shakes, from my healthy diet, from waking up early…. fabulous! However, I’m not the type of person that can sit around and do nothing all day, so00, to everyones surprise (especially my mom’s) I started trying my hand at some baking. I’ll have to say my favorite course to cook is dessert! I just finished my first attempt at a cheesecake and it was pretty good if I say so myself. I mean, I did brown the entire top of it but I just scraped that off and nobody knew the difference. That still counts right? I think my cookies, muffins and breads are my strong suit. I like Paula Deen’s approach to cooking with lots of real butter! Just admit it, it DOES taste better. If you see Justin next year looking like Jared, the Subway Guy, BEFORE he started his Subway diet… you’ll know why…
Now before you get too many images of me slaving away in the kitchen, I did start training with Jay, my fitness trainer, 2 weeks ago, and yes, I started with my protein shakes in the morning again too. I was getting antsy and feeling good so I decided to go ahead with some gym workouts. Another project I forgot to mention was painting our 1 car garage, which we’re turning into a little home gym. I chose my favorite colors of the moment, bright Lime green and deep Aqua. That combined with some hot pink stripes it definitely classifies as a workout room, well, my kind of workout room:) I’m in the process of making a Workout Playlist for my IPod. You know that point you get to, when you’re sick of everything on your current playlist and need to make a new one? Yea, I’m there! Give me some ideas!!! Right now it’s a pretty eclectic list, ranging from artists like Nickelback to Eric Church and Akon to The Script with a couple electronica songs by Tiesto in between. I’ll post the final list when it comes together. As much as I love working out even I need a boost to finish my last sets!
As far as tonight goes, I think I’m going to tune into some Law and Order and go take Ruger out for his evening walk, but I guess at 140lbs he’s the one walking me! Hope to hear from all you soon and thanks for logging on to my website!!
xoxo -Bethanie
Can you believe I actually took the time to update my own BLOG!! It has been a rocky few months for me in my singles game, and as a result of that I have neglected my website and my fans. I apologize, but when you are not winning the last thing you want to do is update your blog. As most of you know Europe did not go so well for me in singles this year as it did in 2008. Nadia Petrova and I were able to win a few doubles titles and make it to the quarterfinals of the French Open which was cool. The downside to not winning on the road is how long the European season felt.
After Wimby it was nice to get home for two weeks before we had to get back on the road. sometimes I wish I would have had at least a month off. I just finished up in Toronto and am taking the week off before the US Open so I can clear the head a little and work on my game. I wish I had more to report for you right now, but if you want to check out the wtatour.com site you can read up on the player blog that I did during the Cincinnati Tournament last week.
As always, feel free to make comments and ask questions as I should get back to you all much sooner this time! Thanks for the continued support.
